Stanley Turrentine was just beginning to turn heads in jazz circles in the early ’60s when he made an appearance at Minton’s with guitarist Grant Green, pianist Horace Parlan, bassist George Tucker, and drummer Al Harewood. The group mixes hard bop with funk and soul jazz; Turrentine’s tone, sound, and pacing are good, although he wasn’t yet the master at ballads he would be later in his career. Standards and a couple of blues make up the repertoire, giving listeners a definitive look at the soulful Mr. T. near the beginning of his productive musical life.

Stevie Ray Vaughan’s second album, Couldn’t Stand the Weather, pretty much did everything a second album should do: it confirmed that the acclaimed debut was no fluke, while matching, if not bettering, the sales of its predecessor, thereby cementing Vaughan’s status as a giant of modern blues. So why does it feel like a letdown? Perhaps because it simply offers more of the same, all the while relying heavily on covers. Of the eight songs, half are covers, while two of his four originals are instrumentals — not necessarily a bad thing, but it gives the impression that Vaughan threw the album together in a rush, even if he didn’t. Nevertheless, Couldn’t Stand the Weather feels a bit like a holding pattern, since there’s no elaboration on Double Trouble’s core sound and no great strides forward, whether it’s in Vaughan’s songwriting or musicianship. Still, as holding patterns go, it’s a pretty enjoyable one, since Vaughan and Double Trouble play spiritedly throughout the record. With its swaggering, stuttering riff, the title track ranks as one of Vaughan’s classics, and thanks to a nuanced vocal, he makes W.C. Clark’s “Cold Shot” his own. The instrumentals — the breakneck Lonnie Mack-styled “Scuttle Buttin’” and “Stang’s Swang,” another effective demonstration of Vaughan’s jazz inclinations — work well, even if the original shuffle “Honey Bee” fails to make much of an impression and the cover of “Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)” is too reminiscent of Jimi Hendrix’s original. So, there aren’t many weaknesses on the record, aside from the suspicion that Vaughan didn’t really push himself as hard as he could have, and the feeling that if he had, he would have come up with something a bit stronger.

It’s hard to overestimate the impact Stevie Ray Vaughan’s debut, Texas Flood, had upon its release in 1983. At that point, blues was no longer hip, the way it was in the ’60s. Texas Flood changed all that, climbing into the Top 40 and spending over half a year on the charts, which was practically unheard of for a blues recording. Vaughan became a genuine star and, in doing so, sparked a revitalization of the blues. This was a monumental impact, but his critics claimed that, no matter how prodigious Vaughan’s instrumental talents were, he didn’t forge a distinctive voice; instead, he wore his influences on his sleeve, whether it was Albert King’s pinched yet muscular soloing or Larry Davis’ emotive singing. There’s a certain element of truth in that, but that was sort of the point of Texas Flood. Vaughan didn’t hide his influences; he celebrated them, pumping fresh blood into a familiar genre. When Vaughan and Double Trouble cut the album over the course of three days in 1982, he had already played his set lists countless times; he knew how to turn this material inside out or goose it up for maximum impact. The album is paced like a club show, kicking off with Vaughan’s two best self-penned songs, “Love Struck Baby” and “Pride and Joy,” then settling into a pair of covers, the slow-burning title track and an exciting reading of Howlin’ Wolf’s “Tell Me,” before building to the climax of “Dirty Pool” and “I’m Crying.” Vaughan caps the entire thing with “Lenny,” a lyrical, jazzy tribute to his wife. It becomes clear that Vaughan’s true achievement was finding something personal and emotional by fusing different elements of his idols. Sometimes the borrowing was overt, and other times subtle, but it all blended together into a style that recalled the past while seizing the excitement and essence of the present.

Stuff was a legendary fusion group that existed briefly in the late 1970s. They were quite popular for a few years, recording four albums for Warner Bros. and having occasional reunions in the 80s. Under the leadership of bassist Gordon Edwards, first-call New York studio musicians got together and mostly played for their own fun.

Stuff never won the respect of bop snobs, but that isn’t what they were going for. The band’s specialty was an accessible, groove-oriented blend of jazz, R&B, and pop, and not everyone who bought their records was a jazz expert. Though some of Stuff’s fans knew a lot about jazz, others were Average White Band or Chaka Khan fans who bought the occasional Grover Washington, Jr. album. Stuff’s LPs weren’t amazing, but they were generally likable. That is the case with this self-titled debut album, which was produced by Herb Lovelle and Tommy LiPuma and earned the band a loyal following in 1976. While congenial tunes like “Reflections of Divine Love” and “Foots” aren’t breathtaking, they’re pleasant and easy to like. Guitarist Eric Gale, drummer Steve Gadd, and other Stuff members were capable of a lot more. Nonetheless, the band’s recording career was off to a decent, if unremarkable, start with this 1976 LP.

Like George Gershwin and Cole Porter, the music of Jimmy McHugh is an essential part of the American popular song canon, and jazz musicians have always been the canon’s greatest interpreters. On this CD, New Orleans-born trumpeter Terence Blanchard delivers fresh renditions of McHugh’s songs with four of the brightest singers on the scene. The cool Canadian chanteuse Diana Krall tickles the title track with her Shirley Horn-like vocals and pianisms, while Jane Monheit graces the ballad “Too Young to Go Steady” and the bouncy “I Can’t Give You Anything but Love” with her quiet-storm phrasing. Dianne Reeves’s powerful voice imbues “I Can’t Believe You’re in Love with Me” and the midtempo “Can’t Get Out of This Mood” with new emotional colors. Cassandra Wilson’s down-South delivery transforms “Don’t Blame Me” and “Sunny Side of the Street” into slow-drag and tango-tinged numbers. Blanchard’s instrumental versions of “You’re a Sweetheart” and “Lost in a Fog,” with the tenor saxophonist Brice Winston, are lyrical in their own jazzy ways.

Let’s Get Lost is a bit of a letdown when placed next to Blanchard’s 2000 effort, Wandering Moon, which featured a blistering sextet playing original music. This album is a tribute to songwriter Jimmy McHugh, a pillar of Broadway and Hollywood throughout much of the first half of the 20th century. Blanchard takes extensive liberties with McHugh’s songs and enlists four very well-known female vocalists to help him pull it off: Diana Krall, Jane Monheit, Dianne Reeves, and Cassandra Wilson. They appear on two songs apiece — except for Krall, who leads off the album playing piano and singing only on the title track. Four of the 11 selections are instrumentals, featuring Blanchard with his regular band members Edward Simon (piano), Derek Nievergelt (bass), and Eric Harland (drums), with tenor saxophonist Brice Winston joining on three of the tunes. There are a number of gripping moments — particularly Ed Simon’s daredevil arrangement of “I’m in the Mood for Love,” Cassandra Wilson’s laid-back “Don’t Blame Me,” and Dianne Reeves’s forlorn yet zesty “Can’t Get Out of This Mood.” But the come-and-go rotation of vocalists makes the album seem more like a variety show than a sustained creative exercise. Also, some of the arrangements don’t really fit the songs. “Sunny Side of the Street,” for instance, sounds cloudy indeed.

Phaedra is one of the most important, artistic, and exciting works in the history of electronic music, a brilliant and compelling summation of Tangerine Dream’s early avant-space direction balanced with the synthesizer/sequencer technology just beginning to gain a foothold in nonacademic circles. The result is best heard on the 15-minute title track, unparalleled before or since for its depth of sound and vision. Given focus by the arpeggiated trance that drifts in and out of the mix, the track progresses through several passages including a few surprisingly melodic keyboard lines and an assortment of eerie Moog and Mellotron effects, gaseous explosions, and windy sirens. Despite the impending chaos, the track sounds more like a carefully composed classical work than an unrestrained piece of noise. While the title track takes the cake, there are three other excellent tracks on Phaedra. “Mysterious Semblance at the Strand of Nightmares” is a solo Edgar Froese song that uses some surprisingly emotive and affecting synthesizer washes, and “Movements of a Visionary” is a more experimental piece, using treated voices and whispers to drive its hypnotic arpeggios. Perhaps even more powerful as a musical landmark now than when it was first recorded, Phaedra has proven the test of time.

Electronic trio Tangerine Dream embrace their equipment and take their audience on an actual journey through this especially good, two-part showcase recorded live in France and Britain. Featuring the early and memorable lineup of Chris Franke, Edgar Froese, and Peter Baumann, Ricochet continuously evolves to the next plateau of pulsing experimentation without getting lost or over-indulgent like other bands of the genre. This album finds the three at a time when they knew exactly what they were doing; rocking without the drums, and looking over their shoulder to make sure the audience was still enjoying themselves. For the number of albums and soundtracks this band has put out (over 50!), most fans hold onto this one because it is so energetic and timeless. It takes a snapshot of the band when they were young, influential, and at the height of the genre.

The members of Tangerine Dream continued to hone their craft as pioneers of the early days of electronica, and the mid-’70s proved to be a time of prosperity and musical growth for the trio of Chris Franke, early member Peter Baumann, and permanent frontman Edgar Froese. The three of them had been delivering mysterious space records on a regular basis, and their growing confidence with early synthesizers (the best that money could buy at the time) made them virtuosos of the genre, even as they kept things organic and unpredictable with gongs, prepared piano, and electric guitar. Rubycon has aged gracefully for the most part, making it a solid companion (and follow-up) to their 1974 album, Phaedra. The somewhat dated palette of sounds here never overshadow the mood: eerie psychedelia without the paisleys — Pink Floyd without the rock. “Rubycon, Pt. 1″ ebbs and flows through tense washes of echo and Mellotron choirs, as primitive sequencer lines bubble to the surface. “Pt. 2″ opens in a wonderfully haunted way, like air-raid sirens at the lowest possible pitch, joined in unison by several male voices (someone in the band must have heard György Ligeti’s work for 2001). Rising out of the murkiness, the synthesizer arpeggios return to drive things along, and Froese weaves his backwards-recorded guitar through the web without really calling too much attention to himself. The piece evolves through varying degrees of tension, takes a pit stop on the shoreline of some faraway beach, then ever so gradually unravels a cluster of free-form strings and flutes. The rest are vapors, your ears are sweating under your headphones, and the smoke has cleared from your bedroom. This is a satisfying ambient record from the pre-ambient era, too dark for meditation, and too good to be forgotten.

Stratosfear, the last Tangerine Dream album by the great Baumann/Franke/Froese threesome, shows the group’s desire to advance past their stellar recent material and stake out a new musical direction while others were still attempting to come to grips with Phaedra and Rubycon. The album accomplishes its mission with the addition of guitar (six- and 12-string), grand piano, harpsichord, and mouth organ to the usual battery of moogs, Mellotrons, and e-pianos. The organic instruments take more of a textural role, embellishing the effects instead of working their own melodic conventions. Stratosfear is also the beginning of a more evocative approach for Tangerine Dream. Check the faraway harmonica sounds and assortment of synth-bubbles on “3 AM at the Border of the Marsh From Okefenokee” or the somber chords and choral presence of “The Big Sleep in Search of Hades.” The title track opener is the highlight though, beginning with a statuesque synthesizer progression before unveiling an increasingly hypnotic line of trance.

The Definitive Collection more than lives up to its title’s promise, delivering 18 tracks, including all of Air Supply’s Top 40 singles — “Lost in Love,” “All Out of Love,” “Every Woman in the World,” “Here I Am (Just When I Thought I Was Over You),” “Sweet Dreams,” “Even the Nights Are Better,” “Young Love,” “Two Less Lonely People in the World,” “Just as I Am” — plus the original Australian version of “Lost in Love.” A pair of latter-day singles that didn’t make the Top 40 are missing, but they’re not missed, since what is here is prime Air Supply — the best songs they ever recorded. Granted, it won’t convince any doubters, but this is the ideal collection for both dedicated and casual fans, while being perhaps the most listenable item in their catalog.

Giants of the early-’90s Seattle grunge scene, with Black Sabbath-style riffing and an unconventional vocal style, in many ways, Alice in Chains was the definitive heavy metal band of the early ’90s. Drawing equally from the heavy riffing of post-Van Halen metal and the gloomy strains of post-punk, the band developed a bleak, nihilistic sound that balanced grinding hard rock with subtly textured acoustic numbers. They were hard enough for metal fans, yet their dark subject matter and punky attack placed them among the front ranks of the Seattle-based grunge bands.

America’s debut album is a folk-pop classic, a stellar collection of memorable songs that would prove influential on such acts as the Eagles and Dan Fogelberg. Crosby, Stills & Nash are the group’s obvious stylistic touchstone here, especially in the vocal harmonies used (compare the thick chordal singing of “Sandman” and “Children” to CS&N’s “You Don’t Have to Cry” and “Guinevere”) and the prominent use of active strummed acoustic guitar arrangements (contrast “Riverside” to CS&N’s “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes”). America’s intricate interplay of acoustic guitar textures is more ambitious than that of their influences, however. Performance quality is usually good, though on occasion sloppily executed or out of tune (especially on the openings to “Donkey Jaw” and “I Never Found the Time”). Lengthy instrumental introductions (“Donkey Jaw”), middle improvisatory interludes (“Here”), and closings (“Clarice”) are frequently encountered. Most of these selections boast highly unusual and inventive chord progressions that work well without drawing undue attention to themselves. Lyrics are sometimes trite (“I need you/Like the flower needs the rain”) or obscure (“He flies the sky/Like an eagle in the eye/Of a hurricane that’s abandoned”), but the music more than makes up for any verse problems; only the odd “Pigeon Song” seems an unsalvageable misstep. Sound quality here has a covered, intimate feel that lends a ghostly aura to this release. Chart hits from this album include the spectrally loping “A Horse with No Name,” the squarishly tuneful “I Need You,” and the nervously dour “Sandman.” Other highlights include the buoyantly charming “Three Roses,” the yearningly lovely “Rainy Day,” and the quietly ringing “Clarice.” In spite of its flaws, this platter is very highly recommended.

Homecoming, America’s finest album, refines and focuses the folk-pop approach found on their debut release. The songs here are tighter and more forthright, with fewer extended solo instrumental sections than before. The sound quality is clear and bright; the colorful arrangements, while still acoustic guitar-based, feature more electric guitar and keyboards. The performance quality is more assured, among the most urgently committed the group would ever put on vinyl. Verses are still sometimes banal and clunky (“You can’t disregard your friends/But life gets so hard when you reach the end”) or cryptic (“Sorry, boy, but I’ve been hit by purple rain”), but a number of the song subjects here exhibit a yearning sense of wanderlust and love of the outdoors that proves to be highly evocative and compelling (particularly on “Moon Song,” “Ventura Highway,” “California Revisited,” and “Cornwall Blank”). Chordal progressions are sophisticated and contain many subtle surprises. A few new style wrinkles can be seen in the country-influenced “Don’t Cross the River,” the drivingly gutsy “California Revisited” (perhaps the hardest-rocking song the group would ever produce), and the hushed yet mildly funky “Head & Heart.” Chart hits from this release include “Ventura Highway,” “Only in Your Heart,” and “Don’t Cross the River,” but each song here has something to recommend it.

Genre: Jazz

In his first American album, Antonio Carlos Jobim presents a dozen of his songs, each one destined to become a standard — an astounding batting average. Jobim, who claimed to have been out of practice at the time of the session, merely plays single notes on the piano with one hand, punctuated by chords now and then, sticking to his long, undulating melodies with a few passages of jazz improvisation now and then. Yet it is a lovely idea, not a gesture is wasted. Arranger Claus Ogerman unveils many of the trademarks that would define his Creed Taylor-produced albums with Jobim — the soaring, dying solo flute and spare, brooding unison string lines widening into lush harmony; flutes doubling on top of Jobim’s piano chords — again with an exquisitely spare touch. The songs include “Desafinado,” “Corcovado,” “Chega de Saudade” (No More Blues), “The Girl From Ipanema,” “Meditation,” “One Note Samba,” and half-a-dozen others (every one of which is included on The Man From Ipanema set).

Genre: Pop

It’s a given that Barbra Streisand loves being a movie star. But this collection of pop songs culled from 60+ years of Hollywood history displays a love and understanding of movie songcraft whose depth is surprising, even coming from the legendary diva.

The idea of Barbra Streisand making an album of movie songs is a no-brainer; as annotators Jay Landers and Richard Jay-Alexander point out, she has already recorded over 50 songs written for motion pictures on her 59 previous albums. In fact, the only real challenge may be a marketing one for Columbia Records, since potential customers simply may assume this is a compilation of some of her previous performances. It is not. Rather, it is a newly recorded collection of songs chosen and arranged in Streisand’s inimitable style. In keeping with the movie theme, she has thought big, using a 75-piece orchestra of the kind usually only found on a studio back-lot for a soundtrack. But all that firepower is used for support, not for its own sake. The key word here is “lush,” not lavish. Streisand’s immediately identifiable voice floats over the music, never challenged by it, so she is able to achieve her usual close-up, detailed performance, alternately intimate and expansive. At 61, she retains remarkable purity and range in her voice, though she is less interested in demanding effects. This is a smooth, conversational vocal album. Streisand’s song collection is characteristic of her. As usual, she isn’t much interested in the Great American Songbook of the interwar period. Only two songs, 1935’s “I’m in the Mood for Love” and 1936’s “Smile,” date from before her birth, with most songs coming from the ’50s and ’60s. And, as usual, the songs as written sometimes don’t satisfy her, so she has prevailed on the composers to change them. Johnny Mandel willingly wrote a new verse to her specifications for “Emily,” and Bob Telson did the same for the obscure “Calling You” from Bagdad Café. Streisand’s age is reflected in her choices, too. She frequently goes for lyrics about mature love such as “How Do You Keep the Music Playing?” and “The Second Time Around,” and she sounds more convincing singing them, giving the words more emphasis than she does, for instance, when she just tosses off the line “You’re life itself!” in “Wild Is the Wind.” As she herself notes, “You’re Gonna Hear from Me,” which closes the album, is reminiscent of the assertive songs she sang in her youth, such as “Don’t Rain on My Parade,” and that makes it all the more notable that she sings it in such a mellow way, as a fond memory rather than an upstart declaration. It makes a fitting closer. If The Movie Album is not the sort of revelation that Streisand’s 1985 masterpiece, The Broadway Album, was, it nevertheless gives the listener some superior new takes on standards the singer has not addressed previously and uncovers a gem or two that had been overlooked till now.

A wonderful live album that capitalizes on Withers’ trademark melancholy soul sound while expanding the music to fit the room granted by a live show. Lovely versions of “Grandma’s Hands” and “Lean on Me” are balanced by heartfelt downbeat numbers like “Better Off Dead” and “I Can’t Write Left-Handed,” the latter being an anti-war song with a chilling message. The set finishes off with the lengthy “Harlem/Cold Baloney,” with lots of audience-pleased call-and-response going on. One of the best live releases from the ’70s.

A word of warning: the notes to this CD may detract from the lovely music it contains. German ensemble Blue Chamber Quartet commissioned journalist Cathrin Kahlweit to write a brief essay for each of the work’s 20 movements, first-person vignettes describing the lives of children in 20 countries that seemingly have no discernable relationship to Corea’s gentle, sophisticated miniatures.

Corea wrote this suite of pieces for piano in the 1970s and ’80s, and it has been recorded both in the original version and in various arrangements numerous times. The pieces are delightful — playful, lively, graceful, and inventive — and there is nothing about them that marks them as entertainment only for children. This is music that can be savored by anyone with a taste for directly communicative new music. The music works beautifully in this arrangement by group member Thomas Schindl, scored for piano, harp, vibraphone, and double bass, along with a part for guest percussionist Sven von Samson. The colorful and unusual instrumentation creates an even broader expressive palette than the piano version, and the evocative percussion atmospherics that surround some of the pieces add about 10 minutes to the total duration of the suite. The playing is delicate and spirited throughout, and the sound quality of the SACD is balanced and detailed. ~allmusicguide

Having at last laid Roxy to bed with its final, intoxicatingly elegant albums, Ferry continued its end-days spirit with his own return to solo work. Dedicated to Ferry’s father, Boys and Girls is deservedly most famous for its smash single “Slave to Love.” With a gentle samba-derived rhythm leading into the steadier rock pace of the song, it’s ’80s Ferry at his finest, easy listening without being hopelessly soporific. As a whole, Boys and Girls fully established the clean, cool vision of Ferry on his own to the general public. Instead of ragged rock explosions, emotional extremes, and all that made his ’70s work so compelling in and out of Roxy, Ferry here is the suave, debonair if secretly moody and melancholic lover, with music to match. Co-producer Rhett Davies, continuing his role from the latter Roxy albums, picks up where Avalon left off right from the slinky opening grooves of “Sensation.” The range of people on the album is an intriguing mix, from latterday Roxy members like Andy Newmark and Alan Spenner to avid Roxy disciples like Chic’s Nile Rodgers. Everyone is subordinated to Ferry’s overall vision, and as a result there’s not as much full variety on Boys and Girls as might be thought or hoped. The album’s biggest flaw is indeed that it’s almost too smooth, with not even the hint of threat or edge that Ferry once readily made his own. As something that’s a high cut above the usual mid-’80s yuppie smarm music, though, Boys and Girls remains an enjoyable keeper that has aged well.

Beoga – Live At Stockfisch Studio – Stockfisch Records stereo-only SACD SFR 357.4053.2, 49:56 *****:

(Liam Bradley – piano, keys; Niamh Dunne – Lead Vocal, fiddle; Eamon Murray – bodhran; Damian McKee – button accordion; Sean Og Graham – button accordion, guitar, backing vocals)

When Beoga (Irish word for lively) formed their ensemble in 2002, traditional Irish music was rocked onto its heels. Combining Celtic based contexts with furious infusions of jazz, folk and vigorous swing, the band assimilated into the world music culture with bravado. The release of their debut album, A Lovely Place, garnered both critical and popular acclaim. The core group of Liam Bradley, Eammon Murray, Damian McKee and Sean Og Graham, was expanded in 2005 with the addition of Niamh Dunne. A second album, Mischief, catapulted the group to stardom. Television and radio concerts globalized their fame. Their youthful exuberance and incendiary nature of their music have created a devoted fan base and worldwide respect.

Live At Stockfish Studio is a riveting, eloquent, thirteen song performance. While steeped in traditional music, this group shatters any preconceived notions. The set opens with “Trolleyed”, as a fast paced accordion opening leads into a jazzy swing romp. Piano (Liam Bradley), guitar and fiddle join in unison with tempo accents and stops. The utilization of dual button accordions (Damian McKee, Sean Og Graham) is scintillating on “Boxy Set”, unleashing a rhythmic tempest against the steady bodhran percussion. The band is extremely cohesive. On “The Prelude Polkas” they soar through an assortment of tempos and jazzy nuances. A change of pace like “The Solid Man” shows a layered, acoustic resonance, highlighted by lyrical entwinement of guitar and violin.

The aesthetics are enhanced by the ethereal vocals of Niamh Dunne. “Factory Girl”, a traditional American piece, is set in motion with a nimble introduction by Graham’s guitar, seamlessly meshing with Eamon Murray’s bodhran. The poignant voice of Dunne is emotive, reflecting the despair of industrial labor. Graham backing vocals complement the lead voice. Sentimental narrative underscores “A Delicate Thing”, as the working class protagonists are redeemed by love. “Both Sides The Tweed” gives the band a traditional format, emphasizing their Celtic roots.

Two engaging covers provide a different template for the group. Steely Dan’s “Dirty Work” receives a faithful adaptation. Dunne’s singing is a deft vehicle for the weary refrain of tenuous romance. The band sparkles on the jazz standard, “Please Don’t Talk About Me When I’m Gone”. A spirited “jug” arrangement frames the breezy vocals in a relaxed setting, spurred on by McKee’s bouncy runs.

Stockfisch has reproduced the live feel of this extraordinary group with great precision. The separation of the instrumentation (especially between guitar and violin, and accordions) eliminates the occasional dint of live recording. The balance of the sound seems proportionate. Vocals never impinge on the music, and vice versa.

Live At Stockfisch Studio is a towering achievement. audiophile audition
